Smart Grid Standardization achievements

FINSENY has participated in the last conference on Smart Grid Standardization Achievements on Brussels, 28^th January 2013.

The chairmen of the three mandates M/490, M/441 and M/468 presented the results of the work of their Coordination Groups. Additionally industry stakeholder provided their point of view.

Mr. Oettinger as commissioner opened the conference. There was a very broad participation, locally as well as on a live stream.

Smart Charging Document contribution by FINSENY

FINSENY, based on the work done in the WP5: “Electric mobility”, has contributed to the “Smart Charging document (v0.4)” of the CEN/CENELEC WG.

The scope of the WG Smart Charge will be to draft a report which includes:

Define and document a generic role models for different actors and their roles in the domains of E-mobility and power system (Smart Grid)
Define and document a reference architectures for smart charging of electric vehicles, which will be aligned with the Smart Grid (M/490) reference architecture (correlation with other smart grid functionalities is required in order to maximize system-wide impact and benefits)
Collect and adapt a set of typical, relevant reference use cases from E-mobility stakeholders to the sustainable processes defined by SG-CG, with focus on smart charging of electric vehicles.

The working group also take the SGAM as the base and focus on a model of smart charging reference architecture, similar to the one defined in WP5.

In 2012, the SG-CG worked intensively to produce the following reports (approved by the CEN and CENELEC Technical Boards in December 2012 and by ETSI Board in January 2013):

Sustainable Processes
First Set of Consistent Standards
Reference Architecture
Investigate standards for information security and data privacy

In addition, SG-CG produced a Framework Document which provides an overview of the activities. It describes how the different elements mentioned above fit together as to provide the consistent framework for Smart Grids, as requested by M/490.

FINSENY Final Event was organized on 10-11 April, 2013, in Berlin

FINSENY Final Event “Smart Energy enabled by Future Internet” was organized in co-operation with the EIT ICT Labs on 10-11 April, 2013, in Berlin. The Event was attended by more than 70 people representing the industrial and academic players and SMEs.

The workshop presented the main outcomes of the FINSENY project as well as in EIT ICT Labs, and shared also the new activities that will be developed in the FINESCE project during the Phase II of the FI-PPP Programme.

FINSENY “Smart Energy enabled by Future Internet” Workshop

FINSENY is organizing a final dissemination event in cooperation with EIT ICT Labs (European Institute of Innovation and Technology) on 10th – 11th April 2013 in their labs in Berlin. We are inviting a wide community beyond the consortium and the FI-PPP.

In this event entitled “Smart Energy enabled by Future Internet” several keynote presentations will be given by:
• the EU Commission,
• the German Federal Ministry of Economics,
• EIT ICT Labs and
• industry representatives from the energy utility, energy manufacturing and ICT domain

Technical presentations and several round table discussions with participants from both the Future Internet Community and the Energy Community will share their views on the Smart Energy paradigm and Future Internet technologies:
• Regulation, Standardization, Security and Market trends
• New challenges on the grid architecture
• Electric mobility
• Smart Building/Smart Market

The workshop will present the main outcomes of the FINSENY project as well as in EIT ICT Labs and will also share the new activities that will be developed in the FINESCE project during the Phase II of the FI-PPP Programme.

FINSENY WP6 has published an article entitled “A Marketplace-Based Approach to Demand-Side Management in the Smart Grid” in the ERCIM newsletter n. 92

As part of WP6 work in FINSENY, Luigi Briguglio, Massimiliano Nigrelli, Frank Eichinger, Javier Lucio and Valter Bella have written an article for the ERCIM newsletter number 92 focused on “Smart Energy Systems – A European Perspective” (http://ercim-news.ercim.eu/en92).

The article reports the work done in WP6 about how the market mechanisms are facilitated by Future Internet technologies and how they will help managing energy demand in the smart grid. New scenarios, stakeholders and services will need to be considered in the development of strategies to manage energy generation, distribution and consumption.

ERCIM News is the magazine of ERCIM: The European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics. It reports on joint actions of the ERCIM partners, and it aims to reflect the contribution made by ERCIM to the European Community in Information Technology. Through short articles and news items, it provides a forum for the exchange of information between the institutes and also with the wider scientific community. ERCIM News is published quarterly. The printed edition of this number has a circulation of about 9,000 copies.

FINSENY presented at the Green eMotion Stakeholder Group Meeting, in Ehningen (Stuttgart), Germany, November 28th, 2012

FINSENY was invited by the Green eMotion Project (http://www.greenemotion-project.eu/ ) to present findings and ideas of the e-mobility aspects in a Future Internet. The two-day event was a great success for all participants, because of the many aspects that have been discussed with respect to ICT for E-Mobility. For FINSENY, Jonas Fluhr (FIR at RWTH Aachen) was presenting some results of work package five: Electric Mobility. FINSENY presented at the Key Energy fair in Rimini, Italy, November 7th – 8th, 2012

FINSENY was invited by the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Germany to have a stand in the Key Energy – International Expo for Sustainable Energy and Mobility as part of the Ecomondo – International Trade Fair of Material and Energy Recovery and Sustainable Development (http://en.keyenergy.it/).
One communicated focus point of the fair was the renewable energy production and smart grids as well as smart cities.
The impression at the fair was that the focus is far more on a technical point of few. There were mainly companies in the area of recycling, waste water treatment or plant manufacturer for renewable power plants.
We submitted a paper based on the Vision paper of FINSENY (available here) which was included in the general part of the cd with all information on presentations of the fair.
FINSENY shared its stand with biogas providers and service companies, so that, the audience were mostly Italian SME´s interested in practical applications and services.

FINSENY presentation in the event “New Century Cities Zaragoza 2012” by Martin Wagner, ATOS

Atos, representing FINSENY project, attended one of the events (“Haciendo real el Internet del Futuro” – “Making real the Future Internet”) organized in the framework of the Zaragoza’s Conference: New Century Cities Zaragoza 2012_ on November 8th, 2012.
Consequently participate in the representative panel FI-PPP program sharing presentations and question and answer session with FI-WARE, OUTSMART and Instant Mobility. Martin Wagner presented the FINSENY vision about how Future Internet can enable the Smart Energy.

The most important conclusion is related to the representation of all type of projects of the FI-PPP: Core Platform and Use Case Projects were present.
During the question and answer session the panel cleared doubts regarding both the scope and results of the 1st phase as compared to the expectations for the 2nd phase of FI-PPP. It should be noted that the questions were aimed at the SME participation in the upcoming calls, specifically in phase 3.

FINSENY presentation in the last EUTC annual conference in Warsaw by Kolja Eger, Siemens

The European Utilities Telecom Council organized their annual conference that was hold in the Marriott Hotel in Warsaw 24th – 26th October 2012. And also FINSENY was represented at this event! Dr. Kolja Eger, technical manager of FINSENY, presented the newest results of the project with a focus on how the Future Internet can enable Smart Energy. The European Utility Telecom Conference is the largest gathering of telecommunications and technology executives from Europe’s utilities and their technology partners.
